The new system allows the improvement in the forest assets management and the charcoal production chain
Gerdau is one of the leading suppliers of long steels in the Americas and specialty steels in the world. In order to supply its steel mills, the Company works with renewable eucalyptus plantations, destined to the charcoal production. And to manage these forest assets, Gerdau bets on the use of the INFLOR Forest, the industry’s leading system in Latin America.
In operation since July/2018, the INFLOR Forest system has already achieved good results, contributing to the improvement of the management of the charcoal production chain on the Gerdau farms. The following modules were implemented: Forestry Register, GIS, Silviculture, Harvesting, Logistics, Charcoal, Sales, Costs and integrations with the ERP SAP* solution.
According to Jehan Albuquerque, INFLOR’s Solutions Manager, the optimization of work is a differential for Gerdau. “The main advantage is the reduction of time and the elimination of manual labor for monthly consolidation of the supply and production information of the 3,000 carbonization furnaces, divided into 31 plants spread throughout Minas Gerais. The system allows the information management of the 150 daily trips of the timber from the field to the carbonization plants to supply the more than 200 daily carbonization cycles in real time,” says Mr. Albuquerque.
Rodrigo Nascimento de Paula, Charcoal Production Manager at Gerdau, points out that the INFLOR Forest facilitated the information flow. “We used to spend a lot of time organizing and consolidating data. With the new tool, we have reduced the time with these activities by at least 20%, thus we have been able to dedicate ourselves more to the effective analysis of the information that supports the decision making”, he adds.
“As the production is scattered throughout several farms, the INFLOR Forest is contributing to the optimization of Gerdau’s charcoal chain management. In addition to facilitating the access to the information flow, the system standardizes the data that all users use, avoiding any deviations, which were often found in spreadsheets fed by several people,” says Renato Sebastião Guimarães, Manager of Forest Supplies and leader of this project at Gerdau. Today, the same information is available to everyone by means of online access and updates.
According to Joaquim Trecenti Barros Lordelo, Gerdau’s Forest Manager, the implementation of this solution takes Gerdau to the next level of management, allowing the forest assets optimization, with a focus on the control and planning of operations and correct allocation of costs, whether in the OPEX or CAPEX. The implementation allowed Gerdau some structural changes in clerical processes, including the approval of field activities with the INFLOR’s mobile solution.
Gerdau is one of the leading suppliers of long steels in the Americas and specialty steels in the world. In Brazil, it also produces flat steel and iron ore, which increase the mix of products offered to the market and the competitiveness of operations. In addition, it is the largest recycler in Latin America and, throughout the world, it transforms millions of tons of scrap into steel, reinforcing its commitment to the sustainable development in the regions where it operates. Gerdau shares are listed on the stock exchanges of São Paulo, New York and Madrid.
Headquartered in Espírito Santo and operating on four continents, INFLOR is changing the way biological assets are managed around the world. The management systems developed by the company are present in more than 12 million hectares of diverse crops. With a track record of over 20 years of experience, its solutions help companies to maximize their forest and agricultural asset management performance, leveraging gains through the conscious use of natural resources and social and environmental respect.
