The Veracel SGF system is used for the forestry operation that is focused on managing wood until it reaches the wood chipper, using the Transportation and Wood Patio module.

In 2009, the operation became more challenging when the rest of the fiber line increased capacity after the mill's start-up. "Perhaps the existing wood patio would have been sufficient, although there would have been a lot of maintenance, had we remained within our original design specification of 900,000 t/a," explains Gilmar Franco, Pulp Production manager. "However, we increased production methodically to 25% above the design level in all of the other areas of the mill. The wood patio really became our bottleneck," he remembers.

Thus, in 2008 Veracel increased the capacity of the wood patio by adding a third line. The main change in the operation was the feeding of logs to the chippers, which was done through a platform or a feed table, something quite different than the equalizing drum of the older lines.

During this period, the SGF also was adapted to monitor its logging trucks by satellite, eliminating the use of radios. One of the essential functions of the Veracel SGF is management of the special tax regimen set up with the federal tax authorities so that it is not necessary to issue an invoice for each truck trip. Moreover, because wood transportation is one of the most sensitive parts of the Veracel forestry operation, the system was designed to function in contingency situations; it works both off-line as well as online.
